Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I do in-home training, instead of sending my dog away?
In-home training with Mike is a better choice than a two-week Board & Train because it teaches you how to work with your dog in your real-life environment, not just in a controlled facility. Behavior problems rarely start in a kennel—they show up in your living room, at your front door, and on your neighborhood walks. Mike’s training is customized to your dog’s actual triggers and your daily routine, with a focus on clear communication, practical solutions, and lasting results. Plus, your dog stays with the people they trust most: you.
When should I start training my puppy?
Ideally, training should begin as soon as your puppy comes home — usually around 8 weeks old. Early training builds trust, sets expectations, and prevents unwanted habits from forming. Mike works with many families even before they get their puppy to help set up their home and be ready for potty & crate training on day one.
How do you discipline a puppy with Positive Reinforcement?
There is no reason to ever discipline your dog – at any age. We are teaching them how to make better choices and rewarding with treats, praise and play. Unwanted behaviors are redirected and we always reward our pups when they make good decisions on their own. If they make a mistake? Well, we all make mistakes!
How long will it take to potty train my puppy?
If you follow Mike’s 100% Guaranteed 10-20-10 Method, your puppy will be accident-free in no time!
What if my puppy is too crazy, shy or fearful?
That’s exactly what training is for. We tailor the program to your puppy’s temperament and help them gain confidence, impulse control, and the ability to focus in different environments.
Do I need socialization or can I just do commands inside the house?
You should absolutely do both — but socialization is just as important as commands, especially in the early stages. Teaching sit and stay inside your home is helpful, but it doesn’t prepare your puppy for the real world full of loud noises, strangers, dogs, bikes, strollers, and unexpected chaos. Socialization is about building confidence and teaching your puppy how to navigate new experiences without fear or overstimulation. The key is to expose them gradually and positively — while still practicing your commands in those settings. A calm “sit” around distractions is worth more than ten perfect sits in your living room.
What if I have questions in between sessions?
One of the components that makes Mike’s training so effective, is that you will have text access to him right away – between the hours of 9am & 9pm, seven-days-a-week. You can ask about behaviors and remedies or anything to do with the training exercises. You will get an answer in one hour or less.
